Custom Mould Making / Mold Making Service
This service is for potters or brands around the world that are looking to get a custom slip casting mould made from a design/concept.
What Is the process for this?
Slip casting is a popular method used in ceramics to produce intricate and repeatable shapes. The process involves creating a liquid clay mixture called "slip," which is poured into plaster moulds. But before that can happen, a complex multi-step mould-making process must take place. Here's a detailed look at the journey from initial model sculpting to the final ceramic product.

Model Sculpting
The first step in the slip casting process begins with sculpting the original model, often referred to as the pattern. This model represents the exact shape and surface detail of the final ceramic object. Artists or designers typically sculpt it from materials like clay, plasticine, or resin. Precision at this stage is crucial, as every detail and dimension will be transferred to the final piece.

Master Mould Casting
Once the model is finalized and dried or cured, it is used to create a master mould, usually made from plaster. This master is often a one-piece or multi-piece mould that can be used to reproduce the model accurately. The master mould ensures fidelity of detail and provides a reliable template for making the case mould. It must be handled carefully to prevent warping or damage.

Case Mould Making
The case mould (sometimes also called a block mould) is a more robust version made from the master mould. It is used to produce the production moulds. The case mould is usually made from durable materials like reinforced plaster or resin to withstand multiple uses. This step is essential for small-scale mass production where multiple identical production moulds are needed.

Production Mould Making
The production mould is made using the case mould. It is generally constructed from plaster of Paris, which is porous enough to absorb water from the slip during casting. These moulds are made in multiple sections (called “keys”) for easier demoulding of complex shapes. They are dried completely before being used in slip casting. Production moulds are the workhorses of the studio or factory floor.

Slip Casting and Final Product
Finally, the actual slip casting takes place. Liquid clay (slip) is poured into the production mould. The plaster absorbs moisture from the slip, causing a solid layer to form on the interior surfaces of the mould. After a set time, the remaining liquid slip is poured out, leaving behind a hollow form. Once the form is leather-hard, it is removed, cleaned, and finished by hand. After drying, the piece is bisque fired, glazed, and glaze fired, transforming it into a durable ceramic product.
From concept to creation, slip casting is a highly detailed and layered process involving artistic skill and technical precision. The creation of slip cast ceramic moulds through model sculpting, mould-making stages, and final casting enables artisans and manufacturers to reproduce high-quality ceramic wares with consistency and efficiency.
